Pinning Insanity

If you do not belong to the site, Pinterest, you are missing out!  And, for someone like myself, in full nesting mode - it is turning into quite an addiction! Pinterest is a virtual bulletin board where you can "pin" things you see online.  It's a much easier concept, than saving tons of bookmarks on your computer.   Plus, the icing on the cake is you can follow anyone who uses the site.  It coincides with Facebook, so you can automatically see all of the things your friends are pinning.  And, I am also following a few of my favorite bloggers too.  Here's a snippet from the website:

Pinterest lets you organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and organize their favorite recipes.
Best of all, you can browse pinboards created by other people. Browsing pinboards is a fun way to discover new things and get inspiration from people who share your interests. To get started, request an invite. (I can also send you an invite, which is quicker; I have heard.)
Here are a few of the projects I've pinned, that I would love to tackle before Evie's arrival!
I've got a curtain rod on Bobby's wall already, from his nursery decor.  I am thinking this would be a great way to display some of his artwork from preschool.

I am on the hunt for a monogram over Evie's crib, or dresser.
Source: None via Jennifer on Pinterest

Bobby has shown an interest in using the potty lately.  Do I want to tackle this project before the baby comes?  Or, wait until she is here, and we're stuck at home anyhow?

I am thinking of starting a tradition with Evie, and buying her the American Girl Doll of the Year, each year, until she does not show an interest in dolls any longer.  I loved playing with my doll growing up.  I am thinking I'll at least get her this doll, her birth year, especially since she is from Hawaii (Bob's birthplace.)

I have an old silver platter that I've never used.  I think it would look cute in my kitchen, and actually get used!

I would like to try something similar to this pumpkin.

I'll keep everyone updated on whether or not these projects happen!

Our Little Piece of Heaven

Over the course of this blog's history, I've gotten a lot of comments and questions regarding our fabulous neighborhood. I have been completely obsessed with our "little piece of heaven" for quite awhile now. Before we even moved, I was staking out our new home. Remember this post?

As Bobby has gotten older, and we've met more people, I could not feel more blessed that this is our home. The amenities here are fantastic, and everything is perfectly manicured, and simply beautiful. It is the perfect place to raise a family, and I would not want to live anywhere else. I remember last fall, during one of my early evening runs, how europhic I felt as I was running through our neighborhood. There was a chill in the air, the sun was setting, and everyone's homes were decorated for Halloween. It just felt perfect. This is the kind of feeling I get almost daily!

Now, with all of that being said, sometimes I feel like we live in a bubble (i.e. The Truman Show), but I almost like that aspect of the community. There is never a dull moment here, which is a blessing to me, as a stay-at-home mom. The pool, park, or trails are always full of my friends, and acquaintances. With a simple text, or Facebook email, I can usually round up at least one friend to hang out with during the day. Playtime with Bobby, errands, exercise, and our neighborhood give us plenty to do on a daily basis.

Nate Berkus and Oprah always speak of how your home should be a sanctuary for you. I agree wholeheartedly. And, in our case, our community is an extension of that.

What makes your home or neighborhood so great? Are you a suburbanite, city dweller, or country gal?

Mother's Helper

Mary Grace, age 6, and Bobby.

I had a mother's helper for a few days last week, and it was really nice. Mary Grace lives behind us, and she is in 1st grade. We also share the same birthday. Until she is done with school for the summer, she'll be coming over a couple of afternoons a week. She is still young, so I do still need to be close to her, as she plays with Bobby. I was able to do a few easy tasks, like clean the kitchen, or bathroom.

I remember being a mother's helper one summer for one of my mom's friends. This was my before my babysitting days started, and gave me a bit of experience. I believe I was around 11 or 12 years old. I would go swimming most afternoons with her kids, while she finished up on some chores. I think it's a great thing for girls to do, to gain some experience with babysitting.

While Mary Grace still needs plenty of supervision herself, Bobby loves having her here. He really enjoys playing with other kids, no matter their age. Let's hope I can steal her some this summer! :)

Christmas Trip Recap - Part Two

The rest of our trip in Orlando was spent doing various things. We spent a lot of time with my brother Michael and his family. We caught a Magic game. We goofed off with my family. We visited with my best friend. We drove by our house. We ate, drink, and were merry! These pictures are basically just a summary of what we did, and do not include Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. I'll save that for my last Christmas post.

Bob and I still own our home in Florida. We are so blessed to have a sweet, caring couple in our home right now. They are going on their second year with us, and they are truly a Godsend. Anyhow, we decided to drive by the ol' crib. Our house is very "Florida" and was quite the pad for entertaining. I miss our pool dearly, but luckily, our neighborhood here has a great one. Anyhow, we had to take a picture of the house, because we couldn't believe how tall the plants we had planted right before our wedding (October, 2007) had grown! The plant to the left of the courtyard gate is taller than the house. This plant was shorter than me (I'm 5'5) when we moved in June of 2008.

Our tropical paradise, built in 1969.

Here is a picture of my dear hubby with my sister, Kathy. Of course, Bobby is there too! These two feed off each other when it comes to being funny. I'm so glad my sister (aka, my best friend) gets along so well with Bob. In my parent's house, there are three bedrooms upstairs. At this point of the trip, my grandmother was staying in one room. Bobby was in the biggest room (because of his Pack 'N Play), and then there was the 3rd room. Well, the first night, Bob and I slept in the room with Bobby, because it had the biggest bed. The 3rd room has two twin beds, where my sister slept. Well, Bob did not want to sleep with Bobby the next night, because he kept waking him up. So, the next night, Bob and my sister slept in the 3rd room together. Of course, they were in twin beds. So, the rest of the trip, I kept making crude jokes about how my husband and sister slept together! My dad didn't see the humor.

Bob, Bobby, and Kathy goofing off.

I love this picture of me and Bobby. He is always sucking on his fingers these days.

Of course I had to eat at one of my most favorite restaurants while visiting, Tijuana Flats. Check out the little snot in the background. I kid you not, she was staring at us like that the entire time!

Bobby and Kathy sharing a moment. I LOVE this picture!

Bob and I were able to check out a Magic game while visiting. My brother has season tickets, and always hooks us up when we visit!

Third row baby! Let's go Magic!

Here is my niece Meagan, and Bobby. I have to say that Meagan was my little Mother's Helper while visiting. She really did a great job with Bobby. She should though; she's the oldest of four. I told my brother she's a Domestic Diva in training. And, as my sister says, she's 10 going on 20. Love this girl.

Bobby met Santa too while visiting. I haven't scanned the picture yet, but it turned out cute! This is just a picture of him waiting in line. He wore his Baby's First Christmas overalls. This is a tradition that we will do each year... just as my mom did for me :-)

I love, love, love living in Birmingham. But, my heart hurts every time we visit Orlando. I grew up there. Aside from going away for college, and, having moved there when I was 7, I lived there for 22 years. My parents are there, and two of my three siblings. It will always be...

HOME.

Snow!

Or, lack thereof...

Here is what was left of the overnight snow we had last weekend. I did happen to peek out my bedroom window around 4am on Saturday morning, and it was beautiful! The snow was still falling, and had not melted away.

I hope we get some more before Christmas. It's doubtful, but a girl can dream, right?!?!

Kitchen Helper

BoLast week, I made dinner for a neighbor who had recently had a baby. Bobby wanted to hang out with me in the kitchen, but wasn't interested in sitting in his Jumparoo or Exersaucer. Instead, he wanted to be my little helper!

Notice how I did not give him any pots & pans! Ha!

Decorating Dilemma

Goodbye Fall decorations...

Hello Christmas decorations! Well, kind of...

I am one of those people that strongly believe Christmas decorations should not be put up until after Thanksgiving. However, we did decide to get our stuff out of the attic today. Last year, I was pregnant (aka lazy), and we were not here for Christmas, so we did not put up a tree. We won't be here for Christmas this year, or next, but because it is Bobby's first Christmas, we are definitely decorating. Our tree we used in FL is 9 ft. tall. We had cathedral ceilings in our old house. Well, our tree simply does not fit in this house. So, we took the bottom off, and it is now just a few inches below 7'. It is a bit smaller than I wanted, but it will work. Now, we certainly don't have a lot of decorations to begin with, being just married 2 years. But, we do have a bit. And, of course, during our move, we lost some. Our tree stand and tree skirt happen to be some of the items missing. Luckily, my thrifty husband made an awesome homemade tree stand. I was quite impressed! Anyhow, we've already faced a few annoying challenges, and the decorating has not even really begun!

Christmas is definitely my most favorite holiday. But, as an adult, it stresses me out to no end. Am I the only one who feels this way?

The Neighbors Might Think I'm Crazy...

Or, they might thank me.

So, often times, there are days where I don't quite make it out of my pj's. Today was one of those days. And, when that happens, my getting "out" of the house consists of me hanging out on our front porch rocking Bobby. I love these moments...

But, today... well, today was another story. I was a bit psychotic.

You see, we sometimes have people who think they are speed demons driving down our street. I was outside with Bobby long enough for him to fall asleep in my arms. And, lo and behold, this man comes speeding down our street. I forget that I am holding my sleeping baby in my arms (mind you, still in my pj's, no make-up, and hair a mess. Basically, I was one hot mess). So, I jump up and scream at the top of my lungs "Slow Down!!!"

Not more than 5 minutes later, a man driving a Beamer (who is not speeding), drives by, smiles and waves at me (nice gesture). What do I do? I yell, "You ran that stop sign!"

Oh Lord. I have become one of those people.

I guess that's what having a kid will do to ya!

So far, so good...

My parents are coming in today from Orlando, but won't be here until later. So... it's just been Bobby and I all day. I have to say, (knock on wood), that this day has been very nice. He's been great. After each feeding, (which is a ritual in itself), I usually hold him until he falls asleep. Once he's asleep, I'm able to eat, get dressed, clean up, and of course, update my blog!

Now, I'm no idiot. I know everyday is not going to be this way. And, as I am typing this, I am thinking a nap may be in the near future, after his next feeding. Bottom line - it's just nice to know that I CAN DO THIS.

Question for all you mom's out there -

Do you put diaper rash cream on your baby's bum with each change, or only when they have a rash? I have heard conflicting advice, and am just curious. So far, I have not used any, but I am wondering if I should to prevent a future rash from outbreak. Help!

P.S. Huggies diapers suck!

Couch Sweet Couch

In our home, Home Sweet Home, has been replaced with Couch Sweet Couch.

The couch has become hang-out central in our house these past few days. But, I really like it. Bob and I have spent the past couple of days in our pj's, but I think most new parents have days like this in the beginning. It's been raining almost non-stop outside, so it is perfect! Besides, if anyone knows Bob, they know that he is definitely capable of watching movies all day. Today, we've already watched The Burbs, and Greedy - two old comedies. I did actually brush my teeth before noon today. Yesterday, it was 4pm before I changed or brushed my teeth. Although things are kind of hectic, there is a calm sense of peace and happiness in our house too. If only Bob could stay here just a couple of more days before going back to work. Sigh...

My sleeping boys.

Sleeping boys again!

Sweet precious Bobby with Daddy. It was feeding time.

We're home

Bobby came home yesterday! It was a beautiful day here in Birmingham, just in time for his arrival home. Bob and I sat at the hospital all day, and he was finally discharged at 4pm.

He's been so good! He is eating, and sleeping, and of course, filling his diaper every so often ;-)

I was on night duty last night, and was finally relieved of it at 7am this morning. I just woke up, and it is now noon. We are feeding Bobby by bottle when Mommy is not available. Bob's parents are here with us thru Friday, and have been a huge help. I am hoping we establish some kind of routine with the little one, before they leave.

Overall, we are adjusting pretty well as a family. Last night, Bob and I had Bobby in bed with us, and it was perfect. I'm sure anyone with a new baby knows what I am talking about. It's that time of night when everything is so peaceful, and you realize that you finally have the little family you've always dreamed about.

This is just the beginning...

"My most brilliant achievement was my ability to be able to persuade my wife to marry me." ~ Winston Churchill

Have you seen the below article?

If you have seen this, then you should know that it is a hoax. However, it is still fun to read, and I get a kick out of it each time.

Lately, I have been thinking of what my life will be like as a stay-at-home mom. Being at home is something I have dreamed for myself since I was a little girl. Yes, I know... it's not for everyone, but it's for ME.

Anyhow, here is my take on the article above:

1. Have dinner ready. Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal ready, on time for his return. This is a way of letting him know that you have been thinking about him and are concerned about his needs. Most men are hungry when they come home and the prospect of a good meal (especially his favorite dish!) is part of the warm welcome needed.

What I think: I plan my menus each Sunday for the week. So, yes, if I am not working late, I typically cook each night. Granted, it may not be ready when he's home, but it will get done. And, I am concerned about both of our needs. I don't want either of us to starve!

2. Prepare yourself. Take 15 minutes to rest so you'll be refreshed when he arrives. Touch up your make-up, put a ribbon in your hair and be fresh-looking. He has just been with a lot of work-weary people!

What I think: I don't think Bob considers his co-workers to be work-weary people! As a matter of fact, he enjoys his job and the people there. Oh, and I don't have any ribbons, so no help there. If I'm home all day, I do usually try to shower before he gets home though. And, how does one be "fresh-looking?"

3. Be a little gay and a little more interesting to him. His boring day may need a lift and one of your duties is to provide it.

What I think: A little gay? Geez! Ok, ok... this one is kind of easy. If my husband comes home in a bad mood, or has had a bad day, then yes, I'll be gay for him! I know he lifts my spirits up when I need it; so, why wouldn't I do the same for him?

4. Clear away the clutter. Make one last trip through the main part of the house just before your husband arrives.

What I think: I DESPISE clutter, so I am constantly doing this anyways. Enough said.

5. Gather up schoolbooks, toys, paper, etc. and then run a dust cloth over the tables.

What I think: No kids yet, but see #4.

6. Over the cooler months of the year you should prepare and light a fire for him to unwind by. Your husband will feel he has reached a haven of rest and order, and it will give you a lift too! After all, catering to his comfort will provide you with immense personal satisfaction.

What I think: Does handing him a nice, cold beer count?

7. Prepare the children. Take a few minutes to wash the children's hands and faces (if they are small), comb their hair and, if necessary, change their clothes. They are little treasures and he would like to see them playing the part. Minimize the noise. At the time of his arrival, eliminate all noise of the washer, dryer, or vacuum. Try to encourage the children to be quiet.

What I think: Again, no kids yet... but, I would hope that I would wipe the boogers and crust off the baby as soon as I notice it! And, goodness, if one of us can live under the illusion that our children will be treasures, more power to us! As for minimizing the noise, most household appliances these days are quiet. And, he does the vacuuming - whew!

8. Be happy to see him.

What I think: Ha! I AM happy to see him. What an easy "request" to fulfill.

9. Greet him with a warm smile and show sincerity in your desire to please him.

What I think: Again, if one is happy, one will smile. As for the desire to please him... I think the labradoodle has that one under control!

10. Listen to him. You may have a dozen important things to tell him, but the moment of his arrival is not the time. Let him talk first - remember, his topics of conversation are more important than yours.

What I think: Ok, ok...this one is a toughie. I am not going to start nagging him the second he walks in the door. I know what it's like to come home from work exhausted. However, I don't think his topics are necessarily more important than mine.

11. Make the evening his. Never complain if he comes home late or goes out to dinner, or other places of entertainment without you. Instead try to understand his world of strain and pressure and his very real need to be at home and relax.

What I think: Other places of entertainment? Like what? A strip club!?! Ha ha! I encourage Bob to have "guys night" or activities, and he does the same for me. If anything, it's a chance for me to do what I WANT for the evening. However, we both know that this is an every once in awhile thing. Hey, we're homebodies. What can I say?

12. Your goal: Try to make sure your home is a place of peace, order, and tranquility where your husband can renew himself in body and spirit.

What I think: Well, d'oh.... who doesn't do this? For themselves too, of course!

13. Don't greet him with complaints and problems.

What I think: Again, I hardly nag him, and I certainly won't do this the second he steps in the door. Perhaps, over dinner?

14. Don't complain if he's home late for dinner or even if he stays out all night. Count this as minor compared to what he might have gone through that day.

What I think: Bob stay out all night? When hell freezes over.

15. Make him comfortable. Have him lean back in a comfortable chair or have him lie down in the bedroom. Have a cool or warm drink ready for him.

What I think: Ok, ok, who's the pregnant one here?

16. Arrange his pillow and offer to take off his shoes. Speak in a low, soothing, and pleasant voice.

What I think: I can barely take off my shoes, let alone his. Oh, and if I changed my voice, I think it would freak him out.

17. Don't ask him questions about his actions or question his judgement or integrity. Remember, he is the master of the house and, as such, will always exercise his will with fairness and truthfulness. You have no right to question him.

What I think: I might get slack for this, but I actually trust his judgement over my own. So, no, he's not necessarily the master of our home, but I certainly trust him to make most of the big decisions in our life. However, I do question him all the time!

18. A good wife always knows her place.

What I think: Couldn't agree more - right by my husband's side, as his equal.

So, what do you think of this list? Has the role of the wife changed over the years? Are you a June Cleaver, or a Claire Huxtable?

House Progression, continued

Here is the the travertine countertop we chose for the master bath. It is a bit dusty at the moment...I don't think they have cleaned it yet. I suppose after they put in our sinks?

Here is our master bedroom. Again, I have those ghost "orbs" in the picture. I wanted to point out the color. It is a bit more blue in person. We love it! Another great thing about the house, they paint the walls and ceilings.

Our fireplace tile has been installed. The mantle has yet to be painted though.

Isn't this picture funny and cute?

Yesterday was also the Hometown Fair at Ross Bridge. We took this picture as we were driving away. Isn't this awesome? Ross Bridge is doing these types of events ALL the time! Never a dull moment at the Bridge!
