Your Most Important Piece of Equipment as a Runner: Shoes

Here's an article I wrote for a local running website in 2009.  The principles still hold true today.  This article is pretty long-winded, but I hope you find it informative - especially if you are new to running!

P.S.  This was written when I worked for Birmingham's Fleet Feet, a running specialty store.

The first time I was fit for running shoes occurred during my early twenties.  I had a new boyfriend, and playing the "supportive" girlfriend, I started running - just as he did.  So, off we went to a running speciality store one Saturday afternoon.  I have to admit, I don't remember too much of this experience, because it happened so quickly.  The store wasn't too busy, but had it's fair share of customers.  We were helped by an employee, and were out the door minutes later.  I walked away from the experience with some new shoes (Nikes).  The only piece of advice I truly recall from that day was to always buy Nikes that were of the Bowerman series.  That's it.  Nothing else.

Now, the first time I was PROPERLY fit for running shoes occurred just over two years ago.  By this time, I had a new man in my life (my now husband), and we decided to seriously take up running as part of a lifestyle change.  I had been running in some shoes that were purchased at DSW.  They were cute.  As my running became more intense, I started feeling pain in my groin area.  At the time, I did not realize that my shoes could be the culprit, but I figured I needed some new shoes anyway.  Upon a neighbor's suggestion, we visited our town's local Fleet Feet Sports.

The difference between these two experiences is worth mentioning.  In the first store, I was simply told to walk a few steps, and asked what my shoe size was.  That was it, no frills there.  The second store, Fleet Feet, actually took their time with me.  The employee, Jennifer, asked me several questions about my training.  How many miles a week was I running?  What shoes was I wearing?  Did I feel any pain? BINGO!  I explained to her that I was running less than 5 miles per week, being a renewed runner.  I also informed her of the pains I was feeling in my groin.  Upon that information, Jennifer was able to begin the "fitting process", that is now well-known with Fleet Feet customers.

I have your attention, right? Because I now have a confession.  Due to my experience with Fleet Feet Sports (Orlando), I too, am now an employee of Fleet Feet Sports (Birmingham).  Here's my shameless plug for the article (fleetfeetbirmingham.com).  So, with that being said,  I would like to encourage you to find a local running speciality store in your area. It is best to find one where they will actually take their time and educate you on the importance of wearing the right shoes for running.  After all, it is your most important piece of equipment, if not only.

As a runner, and consumer, you should know what to look for when being properly fit for running shoes.  Some stores have equipment to help with the process, such as treadmills, or video cameras.  Other stores do not.  Do not be alarmed if your store does not have the "extra" equipment.  I promise you that you can be helped just as equally with a trained set of eyes, and a Brannock foot measuring device.  Before heading out the door, if possible, grab your current running shoes.  Although it is not necessary, it is always nice to know what a customer is currently running in.  And, you may want to bring an extra pair of socks, but, I'll tell you more about that later.  And, most importantly, be open to suggestions and recommendations.  If possible (women, don't wince) choose your shoes on how they fit and feel, instead of how they look.  You will thank me later for this.

As mentioned previously, Jennifer asked several questions prior to me being fit my second time.  This is important.  If you are new to running, or an avid runner, we need to know.  Are you feeling pain? How many miles a week are you running?  How old are your shoes?  Do you wear orthotics? What size are your current shoes?  What kind of socks do you wear?  With this information given, the fitting process can now begin.  And, don't feel shy about giving this information up freely.  You may not be asked some or all of these questions.

The next step in the fitting process is usually your gait analysis.  This is where the set of trained eyes I mentioned, will come into play.  What is your gait analysis?  It is simply the pattern of how a person walks.  For example,  everyone who walks pronates.  Pronating is a biomechanical term for your foot striking the ground.  What most are looking for when watching a gait analysis, is whether a person overpronates, suppinates, or has a neutral foot strike.  Mostly everyone will either have what is called a neutral foot strike, or will overpronate.  It is rare to see someone that suppinates.  Overpronating is what your foot will do, if it turns inward while walking.  Suppinating is the opposite - your foot will turn outward.  A neutral foot strike is considered to be the ideal motion of the foot during running or walking.  This step in the fitting process should be done barefoot.

Sometimes it may be difficult to see what type of foot a person has by their gait analysis.  This is where the reinforcement of the Brannock foot measuring device will be used.  At this point, you should be asked to be seated, so the measuring can begin.  Also, if you brought your socks along, go ahead and put them on.  If not, most stores have clean ones for you to borrow.  Typically, there are three types of measurements taken with the Brannock device.  The length of your foot is measured, along with the arch length, and width.  These measurements should be taken TWICE with each foot - once sitting, and once standing.  If you pay close attention, you will notice that your foot will have different measurements from your sitting to your standing position.  This is normal.  For example, you may measure at a size 6 while sitting down.  Upon standing, you measure at a size 7.  Now, you may be wondering how these measurements are helpful during the fit process?  These measurements determine many important factors in what will ultimately be the best shoe for you.  For starters, if your foot changed more than a whole size from sitting to standing, you overpronate.  Depending on the severity of it, you may need a stability or motion control shoe. A stability shoe, such as the Brooks Trance, or Saucony Hurricane will offer more support.  If your foot did not change in size, or changed only a half-size, you have a neutral foot. A neutral shoe, such as the Asics Nimbus, or Nike Pegasus, will offer less support, and more cushioning.  A motion control shoe, such as the Brooks Beast or Ariel, will offer what I call "mac daddy" support.  Width is also very important, because many times, people cram their feet into shoes that are too narrow.  Your shoe, in a sense, should fit perfect, like a glove.  But, you also want your foot to lay in the shoe with ample room.  No cramming allowed people!  Also, most running stores may recommend that you go up in size, but usually only a half-size.  Most people (myself included) were in shoes that were too small for them.  I was buying size 8 or 8.5 running shoes, until I was properly fitted. I am now in a size 9.5.  Your running shoes will typically be your largest shoes in your closet.  Running shoes are not made true to measurement.  Also, you will want that extra room in the toe box to help prevent blisters, ingrown toenails, and stacked toes.  Plus, your feet tend to swell when you've been running, or even standing on them all day.

Once it has been determined what type of shoe you will need, it is time for the fun part.  You should be able to try on at LEAST three pairs of shoes to determine which ones are the best fit for you.  The employee should have done their job by only bringing out shoes that he or she would recommend.  At this point, it is a bit of trial and error to see which ones are most comfortable for you.  Just like falling in love, when you know, you know!  Don't put too much thought into it.  Go with your gut instinct.

The last two parts of being properly fit is just as important as your shoes.  First, do you need an orthotic or insert?  If you feel any pain whatsoever, it is highly recommended to get an insert too, for your shoes.  This help solved my groin pain problem, mentioned earlier.  A new pair of running shoes will do wonders, but with an insert, you are putting your feet in the healthiest environment possible.  The purpose of an insert is to help keep your body in alignment - from your ankles, to your knees, to your hips, and then, your lower back.  This is healthy!  Again, I highly recommend this, and if possible, go with a brand such as Superfeet.  They carry different shapes, so you, as a consumer have options.  This is smart marketing on their behalf, because they have figured out that no two people have the same foot shape - d'oh!  Most running stores should be able to fit you for the insert as well. Secondly, what type of socks are you wearing?  In our store, we have a saying, "cotton is rotten."  Imagine your socks, as you would imagine your cotton towel you use when done bathing.  The cotton in your towel sucks up the moisture on your body, but then feels wet.  Well, your sock essentially will do the same, if it is cotton.  A wet sock will cause your feet to be smelly (oh, heaven forbid!), and cause blisters.  If possible, you should invest in some good socks with a wicking fabric to keep your feet dry.  Some tend to sweat a lot while running, while others may just like to run in the rain.  Either way, you want those toesies dry.  I recommend brands such as DryMax or Balaga.

Overall, the Runner's Trinity should be 1) the right shoe, 2) inserts or orthotics, and 3) dry-wicking socks.  With these three purchases, you'll be well on your way to having an optimal running experience.  So, what are you waiting for?  Go ahead and get FIT!

Valentine's Proposal

We had the honor yesterday of witnessing a marriage proposal of one of our best friends!

Bob's friend, Mike (or, as he says "a brother from another mother") proposed to his girlfriend yesterday. In Birmingham, each year, the Mercedes Marathon always falls right around Valentine's Day. Mike, and his girlfriend Brandi ran the race together. The big plan was for Mike to propose to Brandi at the finish line.

Bob received an email from Michael earlier in the week, with very specific plans and details about the proposal. It was a special email, in that he included us with his family (which drove from SC to witness it), and her family. We've known Mike for five years, and it is strange (but cool!) that he is now living in Birmingham. He lived just a few houses down from us in our old house, in Orlando.

Once Bobby was born, Mike became "Uncle Mike." Now, it looks like he'll be welcoming a new aunt into our family. We love you Mike and Brandi! Congratulations!

Our Labor Day Weekend

We had a pretty jam-packed holiday weekend this year. The end of summer was pretty lazy for us, for the most part. But, things have picked up again. While we had a hint of Fall in the weather this past weekend, the high temperatures have returned this week. I am hoping though, for only a short reprieve. I will however, get use of our neighborhood pool these next few weeks. It closes October 3rd, and I'm sure I'll be missing it this winter!

Onto our weekend...

I mentioned in my last post that we would not be running in our neighborhood's 8k race this year. I had to work that day, and we just didn't want to spend the extra money to enter it. However, when we awakened to weather in the low 6o's that morning, we knew we had to run! Seriously, the race started at 8am, and we decided to run in it at 7:45am. So, Bob threw on his running clothes, and headed to the start line to register us. I was in a frenzy to get myself and Bobby dressed, and give us bananas for breakfast. We were at the start line just long enough to shoot this picture with my phone, before we were off! We did pretty well, and finished the race in just over 47 minutes.

What is the guy behind Bob wearing?!?!

Now, backing up to Friday - {I'm really just to lazy to rearrange my pictures}...

We started off the weekend right, with a Happy Hour in our neighborhood park. This is the fourth one the neighbors have done, and it really is a fun way to start the weekend. Everyone either meets at the park, or on someone's porch (or two) and hangs out. It's a great way for the adults to socialize and relax, and the kids to play. We busted out the wagon, filled up the cooler, grabbed Winston, and walked to the park. The party ended at sunset, and we headed on home.

The cooler was filled with our favorite seasonal beer, Sam Adams' Octoberfest. Yum!

We also got some nice walks in this weekend. Isn't Bobby adorable with his straw cup?

After I got off work on Saturday, we drove over to Bob's parents' house in Peachtree City. The next day, we went to Senoia, which is a small town about 25 miles south of Atlanta. It is absolutely adorable, quaint, and pretty. The town even had it's own version of the "Hollywood Walk of Stars." Check out below for two of my favorite movies filmed in Senoia. There is also a Lifetime show, called Drop Dead Diva that is currently being filmed there.

We had a delicious lunch while visiting, and did some sight-seeing. We also stumbled across an estate sale at an old, historical home. I picked up a copy of my favorite book, Gone with the Wind. The book was not a First Edition, but was a reprint from 1936 (which was the year the book was published). Can anyone tell me what edition this is? While it may not be worth much, it might be some day. And, I only paid $15.00 for it. I also found a piece of paper in the book with a bunch of quotes on it, dated in 1941. Pretty cool, right?

Finally, our last adventure that day, was a trip to Southern Living's Idea House. While I took nearly 75 photos while in the house, I'll only spare you with a couple of my favorite features.

I loved this storage solution for under a staircase!

How cute is this nursery?

If you happen to be my friend on Facebook, check out the entire album there!

Overall, we had a fantastic time! We finished the weekend with dinner at our neighbor's house last night. I hope you enjoyed your Labor Day weekend, as much as we did ours!

Mercedes Half Marathon - February 14, 2010

Bob and I ran in the Mercedes-Benz Half Marathon on Sunday, February 14th. This race is Birmingham's biggest race, with 10,000 runners each year. It was 13.1 miles through downtown Birmingham, and it's urban neighborhoods. The weather was perfect for a long run too - sunny, and highs never reaching above 40.

Bob and I totally winged this race, with "training" runs never maxing out over 5 miles. We both have had previous injuries that held us back from properly training. We opted to run for 4 minutes, and walk 1 minute. With that method, we were able to comfortably run without feeling too much fatigue. We did that until about mile 10, and then we chose to run the remaining 3.1 miles. As for me, my IT Band issues did not creep up on me until mile 7. I was actually thankful for that. I went into the race thinking that I'd start to feel pain by mile 4. Anyhow, miles 7-9 were extremely painful, but I kept at it. I stopped and stretched a couple of times, as my right leg felt like a block of concrete - tight! After mile 9, the pain went numb. Again, I was thankful for that too. I kept at it, again, with stopping to stretch one more time. The last 1/2 mile was tough for me. At that point, the pain had returned, and the fatigue had finally set-in. I was so thankful to have my husband there to cheer me on. Without him, I'm not sure if I would have finished it!

We proudly finished with a time of -

2:13!!!

We really thought our time would be closer to 2:30, but I suppose with the race atmosphere and the adrenaline that ensues, we finished sooner. Our average pace was a 10:04 mile. Unfortunately, Bob's parents (they kept Bobby) missed us crossing the finish line, because we finished earlier. Better luck next year!

Onto the pictures, taken by Bob's dad...

Our motto, "Couples who run together, stay together."

Family pic, post-race.

Boutwell Auditorium hosted the after-race party.

Bobby and I, with Amy and Drew. They were there to cheer Bart on, as he also ran the half.

Mike, me, and Bob - three peas in a pod.

Drew and his daddy, Bart. Amy made Drew a onesie with his daddy's race bib number on it. It said "Team Wilder" on the back, and "Go Daddy" on the front. Too cute!!!

Training Update

Sorry, no fun pictures for today's post. I still need to upload the pictures though from our New Year's Eve dinner.

Anyhow, the half marathon I'm dreading is coming up in six weeks! I'm dreading it, because it's my first one, and I have not been able to train properly for it. I am finally back to my running, but am doing just shorter runs. Bob is also signed up, and he's run less than me. We've both had injuries and pain holding us back.

So, what will we do? Our goal is to just finish at this point. I would have liked to have set a goal of a time to finish in, but that's not gonna happen. We are planning to follow a plan designed by Jeff Galloway, which consists of running 4 minutes, and walking 1 minute. His principles teach one to run injury free.

(As I'm typing this, Bobby is making the funniest faces! Love that kid...)

But, we both have been pretty consistent with our cross-training, so hopefully that will help in the end!

As for this week... it's going to be cold here in the 'Ham. We are expecting snow on Thursday! Bobby and I will most likely be indoors all week, with the exception of today's Kindermusik class. I am also going to watch tonight's premier episode of The Bachelor with some girls in the neighborhood later. I'm excited for that! And, I've got a hair appointment on Thursday, which is much needed!

I hope you all have a great week, and stay warm!

Random Updates

1. Bobby is surprising us each day with something new! This morning, he basically fed himself with his bottle. I had to help him for most of it, but by the end (when it wasn't so heavy); he was holding it and feeding himself! We are going to set up his high chair this weekend.

I am going to introduce a sippy cup soon. So, mom's... what brand do you recommend?

2. Bob and I went to a get-together last night with his triathlon club here in Birmingham. We went to a fun bar/restaurant called the Rogue Tavern. It was a nice bar, and catered to the 30 something crowd. I probably had a bit more to drink than I should have, but it was so worth it! I had a blast, and it was fun to have a date with my hubby, and our friends. (And, no, I did not have to drive home!)

The best part was watching the Fabio look-alike in the band. This guy couldn't get enough of himself! When the band was on a break, and there was music playing, he was onstage alone, lip synching! Oh man, where is the Flip camera when you need it?!?!

3. I worked out this week, and I am hoping that it helps with my knee problem. My workouts weren't too intense, since I have been on a break. I am going to attempt a short run today. Hopefully I'm on the road to recovery!

4. Christmas is around the corner, and I am so excited to spend it in Orlando! I can't wait for my family to see how much Bobby has grown. I am excited to be at my parents' house Christmas Eve and morning. I haven't had a Christmas morning with them in 5 years! I am also so excited to meet my best friend's daughter, who will most likely be just days old while we are there!

5. TGIF!!! Yay!

What a Pain!

As I mentioned previously, I am signed up to run the Mercedes Half Marathon on February 14th. If all goes well, I'll be lucky if I can run at least half of it! I have been nursing a knee problem now for several weeks. My IT Band has caused me to have great pain on the outside of my right knee while running. I have taken a lot of time off from running, and am now currently doing short distances (1-2 miles), and doing intervals of running and walking. I am only doing this a couple of times a week. I also ice it, heat it, stretch it, massage it, and take Ibuprofen daily. I am also running in new shoes. Still, nothing seems to be working. The stretches are ones used by my husband, while he did physical therapy last year for his IT Band. The only thing I am not doing, which would probably help a great deal is cross-training. My running mojo has vanished, and so has my working out mojo. I did workout a little bit last week, and am hoping to do more this week. I need to get back on track!

Sorry to be such a whiner in this post. But, I wanted to update ya'll on my training, or lack thereof. Please say a prayer for me! I'd love to be healed, and back to my running soon :-) Also, say one for Bob. He's currently unable to run too, due to an injury (which is still yet to be determined).

Mercedes Half Marathon

I started my official training today for the Mercedes Half Marathon, which takes place February 14, 2010. What a great way to start Valentine's Day, right?

If you remember from this post, Bob ran the half last year. He is training now for the full, along with a 1/2 Iron Man, sometime next year. He better get this out of his system now, because once we have baby #2, I'll really need him home! Ha! (And, no, we're not pregnant... not even thinking along those lines yet.)

Anyhow, I've been running and doing some cross-training for quite awhile now, but have been sidelined a couple of times due to my pesky IT band knee problem, and being sick.

Today's workout consisted of me doing some lower body strength-training and ab work. I wasn't able to do anything outdoors, due to the rain we've had all day. I am basically regressing with my running, due to my knee issues. This week, I'm hoping to get in two 35-40 minute runs, and then an easy 3 miler this weekend.

I'll keep ya updated on my progress. As for Bob, he's started blogging about his own training too. Maybe one day soon, he'll let me share the link to his blog.

Ross Bridge 8k

Bob and I (and, Bobby too!) participated in our first race together since Bobby was born. Our neighborhood hosted it's first annual 8k, benefiting Alabama Teen Challenge. The race was held this past Saturday at 8am. Bob pushed the stroller, and I set the pace. The race ended in a downpour, but it was a lot of fun, nonetheless. Luckily, Bobby was kept dry with his car seat cover, and stroller cover. Our unofficial time was just over 48 minutes. I secretly think we did better! ;-) We ran towards the back of the pack, due to the stroller, and there were no chips for timing.

We are looking forward to running the race next year!

Run Mommy, Run!

Isn't this stroller a beauty?

We have the same model, except ours is navy blue. Instead of having several different types of strollers, we opted to buy just one. We use it as our everyday stroller, because we bought the car seat adapter too. It's perfect for the infant seat, for jogging, and, just as an umbrella stroller. It is, in my opinion, the best jogging stroller available. If you are interested, go here, for more about the B.O.B stroller. Luckily, because of my job, we were able to buy the stroller at cost. But, be weary, they are expensive. However, if you are a runner, and want to take your tyke with you, it is important to find one that is safe. I have heard too many horror stories of cheaper versions. It's like buying a car... you need to make a safe investment.

Besides, how can we not have a B.O.B stroller? ha ha!

On Monday night, I joined some other mom's in my neighborhood for a night run. It was great! We all became connected through the Mommy Network in my neighborhood. Here's what the group is all about:

"We are a group of fun-loving Moms who live in Ross Bridge in Hoover, AL. If you and your kids are looking for friendship and a fun time, then this is the group for you. Our kids like to play hard and so do their parents."

Anyhow, it felt great to get a run in with some women who are in the same boat as me. We are all either new to running, or getting back into it after having a baby. I think we ran 2-3 miles, but I'm not sure. We are planning on meeting 2-3 times a week. Bob and I have also gone a couple of times. It is so fun to do our family runs! We take Bobby and Winston. Luckily, Bob pushes the stroller. It is tough with some of the hills in our neighborhood. I miss the flat surface in Florida.

I'll keep you posted on my progress. I'm hoping to do an 8k in September! Yikes!

Nesting & Exercising

(Hoover Rec Center, courtesy of Hoover Area Chamber of Commerce site.)

I have a question for all you mommies out there.

Did you have a nesting phase in your third trimester? If so, when did it start?

I am so eager to experience this part of being pregnant! I feel like it has somewhat started, but I am also a bit OCD, so I'm not too sure. I have spent the past couple of days getting organized, and now I just need to carry out all of my To-Do's, and what-not. Anyhow, I am just curious as to what others have experienced with this phenomenon.

On a different, and more exciting note, Bob and I joined the Hoover Rec Center on Sunday. We were interested in a gym that had a pool, so Bob can train for triathlons. The gym is only $360/year for an entire family! Not too shabby. The best part (for me) is that childcare is offered. I am hoping to start back running as my main form of exercise once the baby comes, but I also like to do Pilates and Yoga for cross-training. The gym offers both, along with Spin classes. I probably won't use it until after the baby comes (my form of exercise now is just walking), but Bob has already gone twice. Suweeeet!

P.S. I found an ant on me, and I can't stop itching now! Ahhh!!!

Mercedes Half Marathon - February 15, 2009

I finally got around to uploading the pictures from last weekend. Bob ran in the Mercedes Half Marathon in downtown Birmingham. This event is the biggest race in Birmingham each year, and it draws thousands of participants from all over. Bob started training for the half a couple of months prior. However, 3 weeks before the race, he was sidelined due to a knee problem. He even started physical therapy. But, that did not stop him! He ran the race anyhow, and finished with a time of 2 hours and 16 minutes. He took his time, knowing full well that his knee was not 100%. With all the troubles he had, he still went out and did this. I am so proud of him. Next year, he's hoping to do the full!

Here is Bob approaching the finish line.

After the race with yours truly.

Mandy, Bob, and Gabe - the 'Ham Sandwiches. The 'Ham Sandwiches is Bob's running group from work. Only three were brave enough to do the half!

Every finish deserves a price!

Work? Who? Me?

I have a pretty busy week ahead, but I am very thankful. I'm actually working five (yes, five!) days this week. I usually only work three. I asked my boss to stack my hours for me as long as possible. I am hoping to work up until the baby comes, but in my job, it may be difficult. For those of you that do not know, I'm no longer working in good ol' Corporate America. I do miss my old job (in Florida) a lot though. It was a great company, and the people there were amazing. I now work for a running speciality store in Birmingham called Fleet Feet. You may have heard of this store, there are about 90 or so nationwide. I love my job here though! I am a runner, and it truly is fun to have a job where your professional and personal life coincide so perfectly.

*Speaking of running, Bob ran the Mercedes Half Marathon this weekend. More on that, once I upload the pictures.

Ok, so besides work, I have a fun Wednesday afternoon planned with a co-worker and friend, who is also pregnant. [There truly is something in the water here. There are three pregnant girls on my street alone in the neighborhood (along with many others just in the neighborhood). And, there are three of us at work that are pregnant. We only have 6 employees. So, if you are trying to conceive, move to Birmingham!] We will be heading out for lunch one day, and then glider shopping. Ooooh la la. The glider is the only piece of furniture I still need to find.

And then, finally, to wrap the week up, we have a Couple's Wedding Shower on Saturday night.

Let's just hope I'm still this chipper in my pregnant state by the end of the week. I hope everyone has a great week. And, Happy President's Day, especially if you are off! (I would have been at my old job!) Ha!

Super Hero 5k

Bob and some of his co-workers participated in a 5K this past Saturday.  It was a small event, with probably less than 100 runners/walkers.  I sat this one out, as I am still on a running hiatus due to some pesky knee pain.  Anyhow, it was a great event, and we almost prefer smaller races.  Less crowd = more fun!  Bob's co-workers had a great time too, and want to do another together on October 11th.

Here is Bob heading towards the finish line! He had a PR of just under 27 minutes. (Please excuse my camera skills, as I was wrestling with a curious dog all morning - Winston!)

Winston gave Bob many congratulatory kisses!

Bob and all the ladies! A few of his co-workers who also ran were not present for this photo op.

Great Job TNS!!!

What Blog?

I know it's been quite awhile since I last posted. I guess my blogging New Year's Resolution went out the window! There's not too much to report, and I will try to make an effort of posting more often.

We are so excited for summer to be here. Trust me, it already feels like summer, but it's not quite here yet. We are slowly starting to ease into using our pool. Bob's been swimming already a few times, and I'm just brave enough to lay on a float. One of my most favorite things to do, is to lie on a float, and look up at the trees in our backyard. This is so nice, especially when there's a breeze. Doesn't that image remind you of summer?

We are having a party for Lynn Cassidy's graduation on Friday. She's graduating from UCF. Because of this, we are now motivated to clean up the pool area. I am thankful for that. We do this every year. It makes our back deck that much more inviting. Thanks Lynn! Lynn dog-sat and house-sat for us while we were on our honeymoon.

Bob and I are still keeping busy with our training. Bob was sick last week (still is), yet he still managed to workout. My husband has such determination - one of the many qualities I admire about him. He is taking it easy though, until he's healed. I did one of my long weekend runs for the first time alone this past Sunday. I was really dreading this. Bob is such a huge motivator for me. Since he is training for a triathlon and I'm training for a 1/2 marathon, we no longer run together. But, I was proud to say that I ran 6.24 miles all by my lonesome self. This week may be a tough week for us with company coming into town.

Speaking of company... We had Bob's uncle Sam/Iggy/Andy (the Ross family has more nicknames for each other than a bus full of kids) staying with us for the last couple of weeks. Sam is trying to move his family down here from Colorado and was interviewing. It was a lot of fun having him. He was the perfect house guest! He kept all of his belongings in his room (this is a big thing for me, I despise clutter), made us dinner a few times, and did chores. Not only that, but he is such a great, nice guy! We hope his family can move closer.

Sorry, no pics to post, I'm at work. Hope to post again very, very, very soon.

Jamie, I dedicate this post to you :)

Ava Grace Lee

Ava Grace Lee made her entrance into the world on February 4, 2008. I am WAY behind in posting this great news, but this is the first time I have updated my blog from home (so, I can use our own pics).

She's Michael and Caryn's 4th child, 3rd daughter, and my parent's 8th grandchild!!! My brothers sure do keep busy ;-)

P.S. More recent news...It's been storming quite a bit. I'm enjoying a nice, typical afternoon thunderstorm right now, I love it.

Bob and I ran 7.14 miles yesterday (our longest yet!). He's signed up for a triathlon in June. I'm still doing my monthly 5k's, but feel ready for the next step (10k).

We have been doing some decorating in the house. I'll post pics at a later date.

Oh, and I went back blonde and cut my hair. It's about 2-3 inches below my chin. It'll be a nice change for summer.

6.48

6.48 is the distance of miles Bob and I ran yesterday. To some this may not be a big deal, but it was for us! We have embraced this new lifestyle of running, races, biking, and becoming even healthier. We both have goals we want to attain, and it is so amazing to have someone pushing you through it all. We ran our little hearts out yesterday, and only stopped once for a minute of water. The run was exhilarating, and I feel almost as if I'm floating sometimes while running. At one point, I had such a "runner's high." We had just started on what I think was the 4th mile. The sun was shining brightly, but it was beautiful (this was about 8am). One of my most favorite songs were playing, and it was instrumental. I just looked up into the sky, smiled, and felt a warm peace come over me. Nothing can beat that feeling!

Breakfast Burritos

Bob and I ran our 2nd 5K of the year on Saturday. It was in a local neighborhood, and it benefited The House of Hope, a local charity. We both beat our time from the previous 5K in January. My goal is to run a race each month. Right now, I'm at a 00:9:52 mile.

After the race, we came home and Bob made the best breakfast burritos. My husband rocks! I love him so much!!!

I keep forgetting!

I'm not doing too well with my New Year's Resolution of blogging once a week. I think it's because mentally, I have set aside time to blog on Sunday nights. Last Sunday night, we had dinner with my family. And, Bob's parents arrived in town yesterday. Family time is definitely more important than blogging though. But, I still love my blog! Anyhow, no point to this post, I just felt like I needed to do one. I'm at work, so I don't really have any pics to post. But, this is what we've been up to:

~ We had dinner with the Cassidy's on the 11th. We met Joe, Rachel, Maddy, and Lynn for a delicious meal at Season's 52. We did not have reservations, but got very lucky with a table right away. It was a nice evening, and great to catch up with them.

~ I went brunette! The jury is still out on whether I like it or not. I feel like in person it looks good, but in pictures, I look washed out.

~This past Saturday, Bob and I ran in our first 5K together. The race was through Winter Park, along the beautiful brick-paved roads, and huge houses. The 5K was sponsored by one of our favorite restaurants Season's 52. Our goal was to run a 10 minute mile. We almost accomplished that - we ran a 10:09 mile. We are hoping to run a race each month.

~ On Saturday night, we were invited to a Going Away Party for our friends, the Egan's. We met Alex and Rachel in 2005 at the dog park. Our dogs Winston and Thompson introduced us; ha ha. We hit it off with them instantly. We even called them our "new best friends" for awhile, as an inside joke. It's too bad they're leaving...they'll be missed!

Well, that about sums up our life lately. Exciting, right? ;-) I'll post some pics this weekend.

P.S. We played Rock Band at the going away party and LOVED it!
